The Art of Scything – Summer 2018

A one day course on Sussex Woodland Trust land

After tuition we attempted to mow an area that is hopefully going to promote a wildflower meadow. The technique is not as easy as it looks but it was good fun attempting to wield the scythe properly, hopefully I can practice on other sites if I get chance. Several conservation group members attended and the outcome of their newly acquired skills may soon be coming to a field near you!!.

The art of scything dates back hundreds of years and is still a very valid form of land management used today. This course is practically based and will cover the advantages of using scythes today, the range of work scythes can manage, scything safety, tool maintenance and of course, the practical techniques of setting up, learning to mow and sharpening the scythe.
